Google Analytics 4 – the successor to the popular Universal Analytics – has been the only and best friend of website operators around the world since July 2023. At THE BIG C Agency, we support companies cope with the transition emotionally and professionally. Because even those who have already completed the migration in Q2 2023 are still struggling with the core questions of the new technology: Where are my reports? How do I isolate segments? Why do I see so much unassigned and test traffic in my GA4 reporting? As a GA4 agency, however, we are optimistic about the future: Google Analytics 4 is a real data wizard that can be fed with various events, metrics and dimensions to develop an individualized ans well running web tracking system for companies. Google Analytics 4

Google Analytics 4 is a web analysis software that enables website operators to anonymously track user movements on their own website. GA4 utilizes JavaScript to track interaction events, access traffic sources and transactions in order to process them in a versatile report interface.

GA4 is the third generation of the famous Google webanalytics software. Its predecessor was known as Universal Analytics which succeeded Urchin Analytics – a software previously acquired by Google.

Challenge

Due to the increase in blocking mechanisms on the user side, consent management and the use of a single page application, the web tracking data of the contract concierge service provider has become increasingly volatile and less precise. Both the absolute number of users and sessions, as well as their origin, were a mystery on many domains.

Solution

By introducing a server-side tracking infrastructure, the majority of external blocking mechanisms were eliminated. Thanks to first-party serving of tracking scripts, the use of first-party cookies and storage, as well as the utilization of neutral GA4 data streams via a server-side Google Tag Manager container, the infrastructure can now be used with new triggers and conditions even in a single-page application without any problems and the web analytics reports finally make sense again.

Challenge

With the store launch in July 2022, online dog clothing retailer THEO & EMMA has set up a lean and cost-effective e-commerce construct: Shopify Shop, paired with state-of-the-art SaaS products that make it easy to automate customer experiences. The web tracking architecture should be on par with this low-cost concept, but still be able to easily track visual advertising on networks such as facebook, instagram and Pinterest.

Solution

In a greenfield approach, the store for dog owners was given a progressive GA4 tracking infrastructure: server-side tag manager, first-party GA4 data streams, a secure content layer and a server-side connection for e-commerce events to the common paid social and display advertising networks. All of this has been integrated into the Shopify theme ecosystem in an update-proof manner.

GA4 can be used to measure more than just add-to-carts, pageviews and transactions. This is demonstrated by this case from the Google Analytics 4 universe. In an attempt to minimize customer service requests, all areas of the website with customer service elements such as web chat, FAQ elements, email forms or tooltips were tagged so that they could be analyzed by product teams. Which website triggers support requests? Where are support requests created? Which website areas are unclear to users? All of these questions could then be answered using GA4 standard reports and explorations.

GTAG Event and Tag variables

As part of the introduction of the GTAG in Q2 2023, the developers of Google Tag Manager once again improved the features of GA4 tracking scripts in tagging containers. GTM admins can now easily attach things like custom dimensions and custom metrics as objects in variables to the respective GA4 event tags. This is a huge time-saver for domains with many custom definitions. THE BIG C Agency took over the conversion to the GTAG variable logic in the respective GTM containers for its and new customers, so that the GA4 properties will continue to receive error-free data in the future.

Advantages of GA4 tracking and webanalytics

The general perception of Google Analytics 4 could be better. The shutdown of the old Universal Analytics system is perceived as “too fast” and the new interface is described as “not intuitive enough”. However, we at THE BIG C Agency are very optimistic and euphoric about GA4. In our view, the system really does represent an incremental advance in web analytics technology. We have therefore compiled a list of the advantages of using GA4 as web analysis software.

Advantages GA4 Tracking

The new data model of Google Analytics 4 allows companies to send almost any type of event to the analytics servers. While Universal Analytics was limited to page views, events and transactions, organizations can now track the processes that are really relevant to them ad their businesses. After all, not every website is an online store and not every company sells to end customers.

Thanks to the explorations, which are available in addition to the standard reports, analysts can now quickly and easily analyze problems “on the fly”. The Explorations interface is somewhat reminiscent of a slimmed-down version of Looker / Google Datastudio and behaves in the same way. In our opinion, explorations are a win for quick ad-hoc analysis!

With the new version of Google Analytics, it is now also possible (in combination with sGTM) to load tracking scripts from your own server and most important – from your own domain. This is an extremely clean way to reduce external resources on your website. In addition, the GA4 requests are also ideal as neutral data streams for advertising interfaces such as the meta Business Manager.

It is no secret that Google has also overhauled their analytics product due to growing data protection requirements in Europe and the USA. And it shows: IP addresses are anonymized by default and user tracking features can be switched on and off with buttons.

In our experience, BI projects often require an initial on-site component. The ideas of “what is requires of reports” are often too complex to verbalize and outline in video calls. Accordingly, we are willing to travel to meet the needs of our customers in Germany and Europe. However, the majority of the project duration is handled remotely in order to save customers and our implementers cost and effort.
