Background
Tableau, a leading self-service business intelligence (BI) tool, was founded in 2003 by Chris Stolte, Christian Chabot and Pat Hanrahan. The founders recognized the challenges of traditional BI tools, which were often not simple enough to allow non-technical business people to efficiently access and analyze data. In the early years, Tableau focused on regularly releasing new versions of its platform, with a focus on continuous improvement and enhanced functionality. A key development came in 2008 with the release of version 5.0, which focused more on ease of use and self-service features.
The IPO in May 2013 was a milestone for Tableau, underlining investor confidence in the product and the growing importance of data visualization and self-service BI. In the years that followed, the company continued to develop its platform and made several acquisitions, including HyPer, ClearGraph and Empirical Systems, to expand its offering.
In June 2019, Salesforce acquired Tableau for around 15.7 billion US dollars. This acquisition strengthened Salesforce’s position in the BI market and enabled Tableau to benefit from Salesforce’s resources and global network. Since the acquisition, Tableau has continued to evolve its platform to offer new features and integrations that facilitate data analysis and collaboration across organizations. It remains a significant force in self-service BI and data visualization.
And it is extremely difficult to arrange the various elements in a Tableau dashboard in autogrid mode – without destroying the entire layout.
